"In the early 1900's, Essie, a poor Jewish girl in Philadelphia, has to substitute her dreams of education for life on the streets. With the help of a society lady who believes in her, she starts her own business but it is soon destroyed by Philadelphia’s patriarchy. Back on the street again, Essie finds herself saving a desperate young prostitute and discovers her real purpose."
